Volunteers Clean Up 40,000 lbs of Illegal Garbage in Campbell River Forest (2026)

A massive cleanup effort cleared out 40,000 pounds of garbage from a forested area near Campbell River, led by an enthusiastic coalition of volunteers. The effort took place at Radar Hill, along John Hart Road just outside Campbell River, an area previously identified by CHEK News as having multiple piles of household waste, an abandoned RV, and several burned-out vehicles.

“Today’s turnout is fantastic. Volunteers are really making a dent in this mess,” said Colin Stuart from the Four Wheel Drive Association of BC, reflecting on the day’s progress.

Local business owner Dave Emery has long wished for the site’s removal and found broad community support once discussions began. “We’ve had hundreds of calls since our last interview—people who share frustration with illegal dumping and want to help clean up,” Emery told CHEK News.

One contact came from the Four Wheel Drive Association of BC, which has led several similar cleanups and spearheaded this project. “We do whatever we can to be good stewards of the land, get out there, and make a real difference. Cleaning this up helps restore the forest to what it should be,” stated Matthew Fox of the association.

The group on Saturday included about 15 members from the Four Wheel Drive Association of BC and roughly 25 additional volunteers from the wider community, all collaborating to haul away the waste.

In total, approximately 40,000 pounds of garbage were removed. Volunteer Niki Neufeld recalled driving past the area in the fall while mushroom hunting and being inspired that cleanup would finally happen. “I’m thrilled we’re making the forest beautiful again,” she said.

Volunteer Gavin Graves added, “Many hands make light work. This is my backyard, so if I can help keep it clean, I’ll be out there.”

Local businesses supported the effort by supplying trailers and flatbeds with cranes to remove the debris, including several burned-out vehicles. The Comox-Strathcona Waste Management Service also contributed by waiving landfill tipping fees, a gesture that significantly aided the operation.

Stephanie Valdal, Services Coordinator for the Waste Management Service, explained the broader impact: “We work with community groups to clean up illegal dump sites like this. It’s not just a community nuisance; because the dump is near the Campbell River watershed, there’s an environmental and public health risk involved.” She also noted enforcement: fines of up to $500 can be issued for illegal dumping, and some violators have faced penalties after their names appeared on recovered items.

And this is where it gets controversial: when communities band together to tackle illegal dumping, some residents wonder whether stricter enforcement or preventative measures would be more effective than voluntary cleanups alone. Do you think initiatives like these replace the need for stronger penalties, or do they complement broader policy changes? Share your thoughts in the comments.
