A beloved UK jewelry institution is closing its doors after nearly half a century, leaving many shocked and saddened. But what led to this sudden downfall?
C W Sellors, a renowned family-owned jewelry business, has entered administration, a move that has resulted in the redundancy of 36 employees. This news comes as a surprise, considering the company's long-standing presence on the high street since 1979. With stores in Whitby, York, Ashbourne, Bakewell, Matlock, and Shrewsbury, it was a prominent name in the North of England and the Midlands.
The appointment of Lee Causer and Ben Peterson from BDO as joint administrators in January marked a turning point. The administrators' decision to consolidate all Whitby sites into one store, W Hamond, led to the closure of four shops. Despite this, the business continues to operate in its remaining locations.
But here's where it gets intriguing: The administrators cited cash flow issues, rising costs, and the cost-of-living crisis as contributing factors. However, the company had previously invested in new manufacturing and training facilities, which begs the question: Was this financial turmoil truly unforeseen?
The administrators are now seeking a buyer for the business, which reported a turnover of £28.5 million in April 2024, a slight decline from the previous year's £30.4 million. Lee Causer acknowledged the challenging trading conditions, including increased overheads and reduced demand for luxury items.
C W Sellors was known for its exquisite collections, featuring diamond and gemstone jewelry, including UK gemstones like Derbyshire Blue John and Whitby Jet. They offered prestigious brands such as IWC Schaffhausen, Breitling, TAG Heuer, Gucci, and more. The company also supplied the Company of Master Jewellers, a significant industry player.
As of now, CW Sellors' website states they are still trading, but online orders are temporarily unavailable. Customers can still visit their remaining stores for in-person purchases.
