Another High-Profile Exit Looms at Ibrox: The Rangers' Summer of Departures
The Rangers are set to face a significant transformation this summer, with the departure of James Tavernier marking the beginning of a wave of exits. While Tavernier's departure has already been announced, it's now understood that another prominent player will soon follow suit, adding to the club's changing dynamics.
Tavernier's 11-year tenure at Rangers, including his role as captain since 2018, has been a cornerstone of the team's success. However, his exit was overshadowed by a falling out with Danny Rohl, with the skipper releasing his version of events last week. Despite high hopes for the season after a productive January transfer window, Rangers could only finish third and were knocked out of the Scottish Cup by Celtic.
One of the January signings, Andreas Skov Olsen, failed to live up to expectations. The Denmark international, who arrived after a struggling start to the season with parent club Wolfsburg, produced a memorable cross for Youssef Chermiti's overhead kick goal against Celtic. However, his overall contribution was underwhelming, with only one goal in Scottish football and a slip out of the starting line-up by the end of the campaign.
The Bundesliga outfit demanded a fee of around £9 million for Skov Olsen, which Rangers were not prepared to pay. His last appearance was in the 2-1 loss to Hearts at the start of May, a result that all but killed off Rangers' title hopes. Since then, he has remained on the bench for the final three games against Celtic, Hibs, and Falkirk.
With Wolfsburg facing the possibility of dropping down to the second tier in Germany, the club's future is uncertain. The team is currently in the relegation play-offs after finishing third from bottom in the Bundesliga, and they face Paderborn for the right to play top-flight football next season.
Other players leaving the club include goalkeeper Kieran Wright and youth academy product Leon King. Rangers fans are eagerly awaiting the return of Mikey Moore on loan or permanently from Tottenham Hotspur. Meanwhile, Nasser Djiga, Jayden Meghoma, and Max Aarons will return to their parent clubs at the end of May, while Derek Cornelius has already bid farewell.
The summer of departures at Ibrox is expected to bring about a significant shift in the team's dynamics, with the club's future in the hands of those who remain and the new arrivals who will shape the Rangers' destiny in the coming season.
