A proposed housing development near Castle Cary railway station in Somerset has sparked interest and debate. The future of this bustling area is at stake, and the plans could significantly impact the local community and its residents.

Nearly 50 homes are on the horizon for Burfitt Road, a mere stone's throw from the railway station. Backhouse Housing, a developer based in Chippenham, has submitted revised proposals for 49 homes, a reduction from their initial plan of 60. This comes as Castle Cary has experienced substantial housing growth over the past decade, with new estates popping up between the town centre and the station, which is located in the nearby parish of Ansford.

But here's where it gets controversial... The developer's spokesperson, representing Grass Roots Planning, claims the proposals offer "significant benefits" and that "up to 17" of the houses will be affordable. However, critics might argue that this number is too low to make a meaningful impact on the housing crisis, especially in an area with such high demand.

The proposed development will have access from Burfitt Road within the Lovel's Farm site, with pedestrian access to Lockett Drive at the site's western edge. Additionally, there are plans for a pedestrian access point to Ansford Hill, potentially including a pedestrian crossing over the main road. If these plans come to fruition, it will create a seamless walking and cycling route to the railway station, which handles an impressive 310,000 passenger journeys annually.

However, there's a catch. There are currently no plans for a pedestrian link to connect the Backhouse site with Redcliffe Homes' approved development of 29 houses on Station Road. This could potentially create a disconnect between these two developments and raise questions about the overall connectivity and accessibility of the area.

The Grass Roots Planning spokesperson further explained that the density of the scheme has been adapted to suit the site's character and landscape, with the design reflecting the recently approved adjacent scheme to ensure consistency and harmony. This attention to detail and consideration for the local environment is commendable, but it also raises the question: Is this enough to justify the potential impact on the community and the surrounding area?
