Indonesia’s Domestic Industries Ready for Hajj & Umrah: A Boost to Economy and Faith (2026)

Indonesia's industries are poised to play a pivotal role in supporting Hajj and Umrah services, a bold move with far-reaching implications.

Industry Minister Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita has emphasized the capacity, quality, and certification of domestic industries, stating that they are more than capable of meeting the diverse needs of Hajj and Umrah operations. From halal food and pharmaceuticals to worship equipment and Muslim apparel, the range of products is extensive.

With millions of pilgrims embarking on these sacred journeys annually, the economic value of the Hajj and Umrah ecosystem is immense. Kartasasmita believes that utilizing domestic products can have a dual benefit: supporting the national economy and creating sustainable employment, while also carrying religious significance.

"When pilgrims choose national products, they receive a double reward," he explains. "It's not just about the spiritual journey; it's about supporting our industries and, by extension, our workers."

The strong performance of Indonesia's manufacturing sector further strengthens this argument. Statistics Indonesia (BPS) reports that the non-oil and gas manufacturing industry grew by an impressive 5.58% year-on-year in the third quarter of 2025, outpacing national economic growth. This sector's contribution to GDP is significant, standing at 17.39%.

Indonesia's manufacturing prowess has not gone unnoticed on the global stage. Data from the World Bank and United Nations Statistics ranks Indonesia's Manufacturing Value Added (MVA) at US$265.07 billion in 2024, placing it 13th globally, 5th in Asia, and first in ASEAN.

The readiness of domestic industries to enter the Hajj and Umrah supply chain is further evidenced by the impressive number of products with Domestic Component Level (TKDN) certification. Over 89,872 products from more than 15,900 companies have obtained this certification.

The Industry Ministry is actively encouraging central and regional governments, state-owned enterprises, and Hajj and Umrah organizers to prioritize domestic products in their procurement processes.

This initiative has the potential to revolutionize the Hajj and Umrah experience, offering a unique blend of spiritual fulfillment and economic empowerment. However, it also raises intriguing questions: How can we ensure the quality and authenticity of these domestic products? What impact might this have on the traditional supply chains for Hajj and Umrah services?

These are questions worth exploring, and we invite you to share your thoughts and insights in the comments below. Let's engage in a thoughtful discussion about the potential benefits and challenges of this ambitious initiative.
