Exciting changes are underway at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, particularly in the Angola colobus monkey habitat! After a period of modification, the iconic bridges and nets have made their return to this lively exhibit along the Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail. While scaffolding began being dismantled in December, signifying progress, construction barriers continue to surround the area as final touches are completed.
Refurbishment of the Monkey Habitat
Peering over the construction walls, it’s delightful to see new decorative bridges suspended from the upper supports of the habitat, enhancing the monkeys' play environment. On the opposite side, the addition of even more bridges, platforms, and rope nets has been designed specifically for the monkeys’ enjoyment. Enclosed by protective netting, these playful prop nets provide perfect spots for the monkeys to take their well-deserved naps.
Additionally, the exhibit features faux wood and bamboo structures that cater to the monkeys’ natural climbing instincts. Although most construction materials have been cleared from sight, some tarps remain wrapped around various props, hinting at ongoing improvements.
This beloved exhibit has been closed since early September, with initial estimates suggesting that the refurbishment would take approximately four to five months. A cast member we chatted with on January 8 indicated that the habitat is set to reopen before summer arrives. Currently, the monkeys are residing in a backstage area at Rafiki’s Planet Watch, where they await their grand return to the public eye.
